2019 CALL FOR CODE 
GLOBAL CHALLENGE


At the core of the initiative is the Call for Code Global Challenge, a 4-month long global competition where teams comprised of developers, human rights experts and other specialists develop solutions to solve for some of the world’s toughest challenges. The 2019 Call for Code Global Challenge called on technologists from around the world to invent solutions to improve natural disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

In its second year, over 180,000 developers and data scientists from 165 nations participated in the Call for Code Global Challenge, creating more than 5,000 applications.

GLOBAL PRIZE WINNER:
PROMETEO


The Call for Code Global Challenge winning team takes home the Call for Code Global Prize, receives $200,000 at the annual Call for Code Global Prize event and perhaps more importantly has the opportunity to partner with IBM to develop and deploy their solution around the world. The 2019 Call for Code Global Prize was presented to Team Prometeo, at the United Nations headquarters in NYC on October 12, 2019. Prometeo team members include Salomé Valero, Marco Rodriguez, Joan Herrera, Josep Ràfols and Vicenç Ferrés Padró

Prometeo created a wearable device that measures carbon monoxide, smoke concentration, humidity, and temperature to monitor firefighter safety in real-time as well as to help improve their health outcomes in the long-term. Within a couple months of winning the Global Prize, Prometeo completed its first wildfire field test of their solution during a controlled burn with the Grups de Reforç d’Actuacions Forestals (GRAF) and the Grup d’Emergències Mèdiques (GEM) dels Bombers de la Generalitat de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain. Prometeo was developed by a team comprising of a veteran firefighter, an emergency medical nurse and three developers.

AROUND THE WORLD


In 2019, Call for Code hosted 625 Call for Code City Challenges around the world in locations that included: London, Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, Bengaluru, Delhi, Dubai, Dublin, Geneva, Madrid, Paris, Bayamón (Puerto Rico), Sao Paulo, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco. All of these city challenges allowed developers and participants to further develop their submissions for the Call for Code Global Challenge.

AROUND THE WORLD

In 2019, two social-media Call for Code Cause Flashes were launched on UN World Health Day and UN World Environment Day to promote the health and well-being of people suffering from natural disasters when they strike, and environmental challenges that occur because of them.
