DOUG FLUTIE

The 2006 Red, White & Blue Award was presented to Doug Flutie, a legendary athlete, community leader and philanthropist, by the city of Boston, for his unyielding support of the city and its charities.

On Patriot’s Day in 2006, New England’s Doug Flutie announced the end of his professional football career that spanned 21 years. Flutie, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Boston College, retired as one of the best-loved sports figures in the region. His Hail Mary touchdown pass that gave Boston College an improbable Black Friday victory over Miami in 1984 remains one of the most iconic plays in football history.

The legendary band Boston reunited for the Red, White & Blue Awards Concert, and performed a few songs with Keith Lockhart & The Boston Pops at Symphony Hall.

The event benefited The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism which was established by Doug Flutie and his wife, Laurie, in honor of their son, Doug, Jr. who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. The Foundation’s mission is to aid financially disadvantaged families who need assistance in caring for their children with autism; to fund education and research into the causes and consequences of childhood autism; and to serve as a clearinghouse and communications center for new programs and services developed for individuals with autism.
